Our History
Girls Inc. is the longest-running girls’ leadership organization.

Girls Inc. History
Girls Inc. was founded in 1864 to serve girls and young women who were experiencing upheaval in the aftermath of the Civil War. Across the decades, we adapted to meet the specific environmental challenges facing girls and young women, always working in partnership with schools and communities, and guided by our founders’ fundamental belief in the inherent potential of each girl.
Woven into the early girls’ clubs are the same core values of Girls Inc. today: the importance of creating a welcoming and supportive gathering place for girls to learn and share in a sisterhood, and a deeply held belief that every girl can develop strong character, build self-confidence, and grow up to be healthy, educated, and independent.
Girls Inc. Huntsville
Founded in December of 1972, Girls Inc. of Huntsville has been serving girls in Madison County for over 45 years. Our after-school program is currently located in the Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Recreation Center and serves girls K-8th grade.

Girls Inc. leading the future.
We have programming focused around areas such as STEM, economic and financial literacy, leadership, and healthy living. We have partnerships with local engineering firms, as well as with volunteer organizations who create and facilitate amazing experiences for the girls.
We not only support girls, we also equip them and give them the opportunity to envision, and then create, a more equitable future.

Girls’ Bill of Rights
Although the times and programs have changed, Girls, Inc of Huntsville always has been, and always will be, all about the girls. With a continued commitment and dedication to making a measurable and lasting difference, Girls, Inc. is a strong advocate for girls and honors the Girls, Inc. Girls Bill of Rights.
